Mulching suits much of Henderson County well. It handles yaupon, sumac, sweetgum and young pine quickly, avoids the question of whether burning is allowed that week, and leaves a chip layer that helps hold sandy soil in place on slopes.
Where mulching works and where it does not
It works best on brush, vines and trees up to several inches across, for trails, hunting lanes, fence rows, view corridors and opening up woods while keeping the bigger trees. It is a poor choice under a future slab, because the chips and the stumps left at ground level will rot and settle. Very large trees usually need a saw and a different machine.
Expect stumps to be ground near ground level rather than removed. That is fine for pasture, lawns and woodland, but it is not a building pad.
What to tell the contractor
Share the rough acreage, the biggest tree sizes you want taken, and any trees or zones to protect. Note rocks, old fence wire and metal debris, which damage mulcher teeth. If the tract is near a creek or the lake, ask how close the machine can safely work on soft ground.
Frequently asked questions
Does the mulch need to be cleaned up afterward?
Usually not. It breaks down over a season or two. Thick layers can slow grass, so ask about spreading it thinner where you plan to seed.
Is mulching cheaper than clearing to dirt?
Often, since there is no hauling or burning, but density and tree size matter. See the cost guide.
